Bringing Social Determinants of Health Data into the Pediatric Electronic Health Records to Enhance Health Equity

Social determinants of health (SDOH) greatly influence health outcomes, yet clinical strategies to address them are limited. Inconsistent collection of disaggregated demographic data, such as race, ethnicity, and other SDOH in pediatric electronic health records (EHRs) in Canada hinders efforts to address health disparities among equity-deserving groups, including racialized communities and Indigenous peoples. These gaps in data collection and use prevent effective interventions. This workshop will present findings from research and consultations with stakeholders and equity-deserving pediatric groups, focusing on improving SDOH data collection in EHRs. Participants will learn about current practices, barriers to data collection, and potential solutions for integrating SDOH data into clinical practice. Through interactive discussions and co-design activities, attendees will help shape a framework for advancing disaggregated data collection in pediatric care to promote health equity

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the current practices in pediatric electronic health records;Define the current evidence around barriers to collecting disaggregated data
  • Discuss the priorities and concerns of equity-deserving pediatric patients, parents or caregivers
  • Identify and explore potential barriers and challenges associated with collecting SDOH demographics and, develop solutions for data accessibility and use in the context of research and clinical in pediatrics
