Professor, Health Promotion
Dalhousie University
Dr. Kirk is a Professor of Health Promotion in the School of Health and Human Performance, Dalhousie University. She holds cross-appointments with Community Health and Epidemiology at Dalhousie University and is an Honorary Senior Scientist with the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute.
Her research seeks to understand how we can create supportive environments for chronic disease prevention. She applies a ‘socio-ecological’ approach that considers how individual behaviour is influenced by other broader factors, such as income, education, public policy and societal norms. Her work is best illustrated through the recently completed, 6-year implementation science project called the UpLift Partnership (www.upliftns.ca). This school-community-university partnership focused on catalysing youth engagement in the Nova Scotia Health Promoting Schools model, to enhance the health and learning of students across the province.
