Genome Canada has just made an unprecedented commitment to precision health in developmental conditions, brain injury and mental health by funding whole genome sequencing for 10,000 Canadians with such conditions/experiences. This investment comes to amplify prior smaller investments in this space to accelerate precision health solutions for kids, youth and families with childhood onset disabilities and mental health challenges. We know genetic testing uptake has not fully realized its potential in these areas within our health care systems. The session will introduce this new investment, and the concept of precision health in this area during a short introductory presentation. Then participants (administrators, clinicians, families and youth) will be engaged in a structured session to discuss 1. What is the value of genetic breakthrough to advance tailored care solutions to children and youth with such conditions/differences? 2. What are barriers to incorporating advanced genetic technologies to clinical care in our current health care system(s) ? 3. What are potential solutions, facilitators, promising examples to integrate genetic technologies into clinical care pathways and existing learning health systems to provide equitable access to all children and youth with disabilities and mental health conditions and realize equitable impact
The session’s results will be used to create the road map to knowledge mobilization for this investment but also other Canadian investments and will produce a clear knowledge mobilization product to be shared widely with all partners to facilitate future work in this area.
